The 2012 Pinot Noir Roman Vineyard is one of the more immediate wines today in terms of its up-front, succulent fruit, but at the same time, it has more than enough tannic clout to age well for years. Dark cherry, plum, cloves, menthol and dark spices wrap around the creamy, expressive finish. The style is round and generous but backed up by a terrific sense of energy. In short, there is a lot to like.
(13.7% alcohol): Dark red. Chambolle-like perfumed aromas of dark raspberry, blood orange, black pepper, exotic spices and crushed stone went into a shell in the glass. Densely packed but weightless, offering superb smoky intensity to the fine-grained flavors of dark raspberry and minerals. Finishes with dusty, serious tannins and slowly building, palate-saturating persistence. This very young and fairly tannic wine boasts good power and energy, especially for a pinot from 14-year-old vines.
