An addition to the range, the 2012 Homeland packs a serious punch. Dark red and blue toned fruits, iron, smoke, licorice and cloves jump from the glass. Firm tannins from the Petit Verdot, Syrah and Petit lend an attractive element of underlying structure to the dark fruit in a powerful wine loaded with personality. It's always a pleasure to taste with Les Behrens and Lisa Drinkward at their winery atop Spring Mountain. Behrens Family Winery excels with rich, voluptuous wines built on texture and a sense of rapturous immediacy that makes them incredibly appealing pretty much upon release. The winery sources fruit from a variety of top vineyards across the valley. (AG)
The dark ruby/purple-tinged, fruity, still primary 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Homeland tastes like a barrel sample. It reveals loads of fruit and luscious richness, it just tastes like a six-month-old wine rather than one that is nearly two years of age. I like it a lot, but I think it needs more time to sort itself out. This is one of my favorite wineries for full-throttle, pedal-to-the-metal, delicious, well-made wines. While the names are whimsical, and often detract from the seriousness of the viticultural work and winemaking of Les Behrens and his wife, this is a serious operation dedicated to extraordinary high quality. The fact that Les Behrens hailed from the restaurant business always drove his vision to produce wines that were simply "delicious." And delicious they are. These are not would-be shrines or for agenda-driven tasters looking for oxidized, thin, emaciated and sadistic-tasting wines. These are barroque! We should all be thankful that Behrens has never deviated from his mission. In a wine world that can sometimes trend toward arrogant and elitist, this is one place that offers a joyride with no pretension, but with great quality. Let’s hope Les and Lisa Behrens never change. A mix of suppleness and firm tannins, the core of plum, black cherry and wild berry fruit is trim and subdued. The tannins, while fine-grained, have grip. Drink now through 2025. 476 cases made. (Web Only—2015)
