Light but plump red strawberry fruit mixes with sandalwood, dried sage and thyme on this nose of this estate wine from winemaker Greg Brewer. Lots of spicy herbals show on the palate, from peppercorn and cardamom to thyme and oregano, giving deeper character to the light red-fruit core. (MK)
One of the best values in Pinot Noir out there is Melville's 2013 Pinot Noir Estate and it overdelivers in just about every vintage. Firing on all cylinders on this occasion, with complex red fruits, rose petal and sous bois aromas and flavors all soaring from the glass, it's medium-bodied, ripe and expansive, with lots of Sta. Rita character, integrated acidity and a clean, nicely focused finish. Mostly destemmed (60%) and aged 11 months in neutral oak, it's a beauty to buy by the case and enjoy over the coming 4-5 years. Greg Brewer is the genius behind these brilliant wines from the Sta. Rita Hills in California’s Santa Barbara County. I am continually blown away by what they are able to put in bottle, and if you factor in price, these are no-brainer purchases... (JD)
Vivid ruby-red. Assertive aromas of raspberry, cherry and fresh rose, with Asian spice and woodsmoke accents building in the glass. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering gently sweet red berry flavors and a hint of candied rose. Shows impressive energy and clarity on the long, focused finish, which features a zesty mineral nuance. Really lively for the vintage and balanced to age. (JR)
The 2013 Pinot Noir Estate Sta. Rita Hills is gorgeous. Bright red berries, red currants, rose petals and mint all lift from the glass in a beautifully delineated Pinot endowed with striking beauty. This is a great introduction to the Melville wines and house style. The 2013 is a blend of 16 clones across the property, done with 35% whole clusters. Winemaker Greg Brewer turned out a gorgeous set of 2013 Pinots at Melville. The wines are consistently of very high quality, something that was not easy to achieve in a year with huge yields. As always, Brewer works with small-lot fermentations, a healthy amount of whole clusters for the Pinots (less for the Syrahs), low levels of new oak and minimal racking, which allows for the personality of each site to come through. They own 120 acres and Greg Brewer of Brewer Clifton is the winemaker. 100% estate. All neutral oak. A third whole bunch. Very small fermentation vats. Very fluid with violets and freshness. Complete. 17/20 points
