Mastrojanni is located in Montalcino’s southeastern corner near the town of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, home of the Romanesque Abbey of Sant’Antimo. Down in this angle of Montalcino it is a little warmer but the wines don’t take on the baked character they sometimes can on the western border. I find Mastrojanni’s wine always take on a really savory, salty, umami character rather than a bold berry/cherry statement. To me this nose gives the wines a really complex character that shows depth and intrigue and I find that it makes a far better food accompaniment than a boldly fruity wine. The 2011 vintage was a warmer vintage but Mastrojanni’s experience in this warmer region has taught them how the vines need to be treated in warmer climes, so there’s no hint of over-ripeness just a deeper more luxurious texture. This is a supple wine yet very well structured and balanced and is going to be capable of aging for 20 years or more. I won’t be coy, I love the Mastrojanni wines, perfect balance, deep, complex flavors and just as a side note those crazy J’s in Italian are pronounced like “I” so the name is Mas-TROY-on-ee.

This is classic 2011 Brunelli, beautifully layered, and expressive. It's bursting with sweet, ripe strawberries, black cherries intermingled with subtle earth, coffee and toasted oak notes, minerals, leather and a hint of bitter chocolate on the finish, with round and soft tannins and a long aftertaste.
