K&L Notes

From the winery: Oreno, which takes its name from the river that crosses the Ponti estate and the hamlet where the farmhouse is found, is the estate's flagship wine. With ample fruit from the Merlot, structure from the Cabernet Sauvignon, brought together with the elegance of Petit Verdot, it expresses best the potential of the territory and the Moretti family's idea of wine. Dark ruby red in color, tinged with decisive violet tones, it expresses on the nose incredible sensations of richness and complexity with a note of ripe berries that give sensations of chocolate and nuances of balsamic. Oreno is a captivating wine, rich in structure but decisively dynamic, enhanced by the influences of new oak and an interminable finish.

While it's always difficult to think of Tuscany as producing anything other than top-notch sangiovese wines, the cabernet and Bordeaux style blends from the region have continued to improve and impress over the last decade. If I had tasted the Oreno blind or as part of a Napa staff tasting, I would have easily been fooled. This rich, structured, and dynamic marriage of merlot, cab, and petit verdot is like a hybrid of the riper California fruit with the structure and acidity of a fine Bordeaux. Aged in French oak, it's a wine for the big and bold cab drinker who thinks he's tried everything.

This is finessed and structured wine with supreme balance and concentration. For Italian wine fans who still want to drink claret, this is a stylish and satisfying option. Tenuta Setta Ponti's "Oreno" has been the Wine Spectator's top 100 wines of the year on multiple occasions, and the 2013 has all the potential to make it back on that list again.

As I admired the beautiful ruby color of this wine the abundant aromatics jumped out of the glass. The perfume was deep, masculine and meaty with lively baking spice and tobacco. The bold flavors on the palate matched the wonderful fragrance of the wine. The tobacco melded with dark cocoa powder and were kings on the palate. The fruit was deep, subtle and streamlined under the lively spice and lifting acid. The wine is complex and gallant without being aggressive. The dusty, chewy tannins and cocoa powder last long in the finish where the dark ripe fruit shows a little more vibrancy.
