Vivid ruby. Expansive aromas of fresh dark berries, incense and potpourri are brightened by an intense spicy nuance. Silky, seamless and broad on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors complemented by a suave rose pastille note. Finishes very long and sappy, with resonating floral character and smooth, fully integrated tannins. (JR)
While most of Brian's Pinot Noirs see roughly 15% new French oak, the 2014 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard was brought up all in neutral wood. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textured, with notable structure and acidity, it offers lots of black cherry and currant-like fruit intermixed with notions of sassafras, dried herbs and spice. *One Star* It is not uncommon for Pinots from the Santa Lucia Highlands to fix on ripeness and size as their principal traits, yet the best of the bunch, as is shown here, are wines of noteworthy structure as well. This one is full, firm and solid with a concentrated core of vigorous, ripe cherry fruit that is underlain by an intriguing touch of mildly minerally soils, and, if gutsy, impressively filled stuff, it is also a bit rough at the margins. Two or three years seem the minimum wait, and we have no doubt at all that it will continue to grow for more.
