This is a superlative wine. As one might expect, the Mazis-Chambertin is Leroy's finest 1986 red burgundy, splendidly concentrated with a huge bouquet of deep, spicy, oaky, berry fruit, full body, wonderful layers of extract, and a finish that lasts for several minutes. Drink it between 1997 and 2010.
This has always been one of the freshest wines of the '86 vintage though it is now not surprising to see at least some sous bois in evidence along with spice, secondary fruit and subtle wet stones nuances adding breadth to the expressive nose. There is really lovely depth and vibrancy to the middle weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the delicious and still well-detailed finish where the only nit is a slight edginess from the acidity poking through. Overall, this is a remarkably good effort at this stage for a vintage that was always difficult.
