K&L Notes

The wines from Provenance Vineyards in Rutherford have long been on our radar here at K&L. They have consistently produced wines of the highest quality and done so for incredibly affordable prices. However over the last couple of years the wines were missing in action here due to some supplier issues that we don't need to get into so when the 2013 Rutherford Cabernet bottling turned up on my desk I was incredibly excited about the possibility to work with the brand again. Then we tasted the wine. Talk about being blown away! I can say without question, and I've worked with this brand since its inception, that this is the best Provenance Rutherford Cabernet I've ever had. Provenance Vineyards began all the way back with the release, in the early 2000's, of the 1999 version of this Rutherford Cab. At that point in time I was new in the wine biz and just learning the ropes. I was working at a small shop and we tasted a ton of wine together, which really helped bring my palate along rapidly, and I can still remember tasting the first vintage of this wine. Tom Rinaldi had just left Duckhorn to help start this winery and everyone was intrigued on why he would do such a thing, I mean he made like 20+ years at Duckhorn and helped them build their brand from scratch. But once we tasted the wine we knew we were in for a fun ride. Now 15 years later or so we are still reaping those rewards. (Bryan Brick, K&L Wine Merchants)

Earthy with cedar and blue floral on the nose, the 2013 Provenance perfectly showcases a more traditional Napa style with finesse and complexity. This big, dusty Cab is luxurious and dense but balanced, with silky texture, concentrated black raspberry fruit, and a subtly rustic tannic finish. I can see why it received such high scores from critics, and the price is incredible, especially for Rutherford and this special vintage.

The 2013 begins with an inky and darkly hued color which betrays its lifted and treble-y nose of blue and black fruits, cedar, sarsaparilla and underlying floral undercurrents of lilac and lavender. To say there is a lot going on in the nose would be an understatement and that complexity and intensity finds itself popping up throughout this wine. Classy on the palate with showy, lush, creamy fruits and a texture that is pure silk this is one mouth filling wine. I mean I’d pay this much for the wine four just the mouth-feel alone. But there is gobs of cassis and mocha flavors all slightly glycerin-y, maybe in just exactly the right proportions, with very varietal notes of bay leaf, sandalwood, a slight pinch of white pepper and long finishing fruit akin to freshly dried blackberries and unsweetened cocoa powder. The best part about this is that it is delicious right now and I can only see this getting better over the next 2-3 years and having a lifespan of 7-11 years without trying very hard at all.

A slam dunk California cabernet that really covers all the bases: great price, great flavors, great complexity, and great accessibility. You don't have to be an expert to appreciate the quality of the 13 Provenance. The seductive textures, the concentrated fruits, and the ease at which the wine glides over the palate will be recognizable to any lover of red wine. You could pair this with a burger, pop open a bottle for happy hour, or pour a few glasses over the course of a few days. The wine is so deliciously drinkable on its own that I could imagine people buying cases of this and enjoying it for a variety of different occasions. When you taste the Provenance, you'll get an inkling of just how good the 2013 vintage was for Napa cab. It's the best Provenance I've ever tasted.

I can't say I have ever seen a wine with the Beckstoffer name associated with it and priced under a hundred bucks (let alone $35). It simply doesn't happen. As to the wine itself, it's fantastic - dark fruited, plush and accessible, with that classic Rutherford dust to round out the finish. There's a reason we went all-in on this one.

K&L's domestic buyer really scored with this one. See what I did there? Critic scores aside, if you're looking for an affordable California Cab that has a lot to offer, this is your wine. Generous, bright fruit with fine structure and balance, this Cab comes out at an incredible value. It's safe to say I will be buying quite a few of these for myself to enjoy.

This is a very well made Caberent with some definite seriousness to it. Gorgeous concentration, but not over extracted at all. Great lush and generous fruit, with a nice dusty tannin structure. A lot of balance and bang for your buck, enjoy!

I love the nose of this wine, classic Napa fruit, and I’m mean more old school Napa fruit, not super overripe or woody, beautiful aromatics of cassis, hints of earth and spice and super intriguing. On the palate the wine is warm, gracious and full but never leads to any overripe character despite the alcohol level this wine is really well balanced, I was shocked after tasting when I saw the numbers. Really pleasant palate presence, long, luscious yet restrained, very well balanced, just an exceptionally good deal.

RP94, Beckstoffer fruit, Napa's greatest vintage, and under $35?! Count me in, big time. This is the kind of combo that we endlessly search for and usually sell out immediately. Those that stash the best of 2013 will have great bottles to come back to year over year, and I'm hard pressed to think of a better sweet spot bottling. Provenance's '13 Napa delivers the goods with textural brilliance, bright acidity, deep Cab flavors, a sense of place, and and overall profile that usually demands much, much more of a premium in Napa. Enjoy now with a few hours decant (it opened up beautifully today after about two hours) or keep a case in the cellar over the next 15+ years.

Sometimes I question whether or not I should write a review. Will the item be around long enough for the review to matter, is usually my first consideration. In this instance, I don't really care. This is great wine!! Unlike many California Cabernet wines that are big and brooding, this is very pretty, elegant, bright, and lifted. Not to say it doesn't have nice weight and good spice, so don't mistake it for a "light-weight", but this is drinkable, approachable, and freakin delicious! Get yours!

The 2013 vintage in California has been a great success and here is a rare opportunity to get a truly great Napa Cab at a very reasonable price. Rich and sturdy with layers of slightly smoky oak, intense deep fruit and yummy spice all wrapped around a wonderfully sturdy frame. The lush fruit feels very fresh due to the nicely balanced acidity and masks the great structure so I suspect much of this will be drunk up early but I'm putting some down for a bit of ageing, I bet we'll see some great progress over the next 10 years in this wine. It has a noticeable family resemblance to the Hewitt wines but at a fraction of the cost.
