As expected, the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz is a ripe, exuberant effort. Plum, figs, licorice, roasted herbs and roasted meats are just some of the nuances here, and it has full-bodied richness, good concentration and sweet tannin. Drink it over the coming couple of years. (JD)
Medium red. Soaring aromas of red berries, Asian spices and pungent rose oil. Thick and creamy on the palate, with flavors of kirsch, spicy strawberry and plum jam. This is carrying about 16% alcohol but it's detectible only in a bit of warmth on the finish. (JR)
Plush, velvety texture with layers of cocoa, mocha, black cherry, boysenberry and plum flavors. Plenty of toast, but very creamy for an '03, with a long, fruit-filled finish.
The top cuvée from the Domaine le Clos de Caillou takes its name from the stones of quartz which make up the vineyard. This is a deliciously rich wine, which shines with very ripe red fruits and layers of modern tannins. Although the aftertaste is dry, the fruit is already attractive.
