Is it a dessert wine, is it a late harvest wine, is it a cordial? This cherry wine from Denmark has recently been making a bit of a splash in Europe and it made us curious to taste it. I had a few preconceived notions about what it would probably taste like going into it, and this wine did not fit neatly into my categories. I was expecting it to be sweet, and while there is sweetness there, it was not as much a dessert wine as I was expecting. Instead the tartness of the cherries helps keep this wine from going into a syrupy style. The flavors are almost reminiscent of the ripeness of an Amarone with some of the herbs of a kirsch. It can stand up to chocolate as a dessert wine, or before dinner with charcuterie. It is odd and tasty and worth trying.
