Mission is California's first heritage grape, planted in the vineyards of the California missions in the 1770s, and producing the first Napa Valley wines in the 1840s. Originally from Spain, the grape is now obscure in the Old World — only growing in the Canary Islands. But the wine inspired a generation of dreamers who went on to plant Zinfandel and other grapes in California ideal viticultural areas. Hendry grafted just 80 Cabernet Franc vines over to Mission in 2012, and now makes this limited release wine, with low tannins and berry characters, that's easygoing, and reminiscent of both Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. A taste of history in a bottle!
