K&L Notes

Corofin is an amazing small project run by Mike and Anna Patterson. Their focus is on boutique production, single vineyard / block wines that represent special sites with unique and distinctive characters. They make litterally a few barrels of each wine with the utmost care and attention. I was super impressed with the wines on a recent trip to New Zealand and we now have a small allocation of the three 2014 vintage releases. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L NZ Wine Buyer) Winemaker's Notes: "The Cowley Family Vineyard is located in the Ben Morven foothills of Marlborough's Southern Valleys. A magnificent site planted intelligently and nurtured meticulously by the Cowley family. Facing NNE, the Main Slopes are planted at a density of 3,800 vines per hectare on clay-rich soils formed through the slow mixing and layering of glacial outwash and volcanic uplift. 55% of the fruit was de-stemmed (without crushing) to a small open top vat, with the 45% balance included as whole bunches. The tank was sealed for 5 days at before the lid was lifted and pigeage undertaken. Fermentation was warm and rapid lasting 6 days, after which the young wine remained on skins for 23 days before being pressed to barrel. The wine rested in barrel until late March 2015. The young wine was then racked to tank where it was settled for 4 months before being bottled without fining or filtration late July 2015. Total production: 223 dozen."

One of the tinier producers working in the Marlborough region of NZ, Corofin carves out its distinctive personality by going old school. The estate is run by a native Kiwi couple who have been working this land for most their lives, and who adhere to strict sustainable practices. The fruit in this bottling comes from a single vineyard farmed both organically and biodynamically from north-facing slopes perfect for Pinot Noir. This is a light, pretty style that represents the earthiness of the terroir beautifully while delivering a linear, elegant fruit profile. Tasted blind you'd think this was Burgundy worth twice the price.

A lovely expression of this great site in Marlborough's southern valleys. The miniscule production Corofin wines are dedicated to producing bright, elegant representations of single block parcels through Marlborough's intricate patchwork of sub-regional terroirs. The Cowley Vineyard is one such unique parcel. Set against the mountain range dividing the Wairau Valley from the Awatere Valley this south facing slope is perfect for utilising the pure sunlight NZ has to offer while the clay soils give the wines great malleability and mid-palate breadth. As with all the Corofin wines the perfume is haunting. Lots of violets, sweet spice and agar wood. On the palate there is a cacophony of soft summer berries, clove and spiced orange peel. The texture is soft and acidity vibrant. This wine has a lovely generosity of fruit but without any excessive extraction or weight. It finishes with drive, precision and a lovely floral lift from the whole cluster component. This is dynamic and expressive Pinot of top quality...shame there isn't much to go around!
