Though it has some foursquare, highly structured characteristics, I was enthralled by the sheer power, density, and weight of the 2002 Pommard Epenots. Its spicy black fruit-scented nose leads to a massive, resiny core of tarry black fruits, stones, and earth. This brooding monster is medium to full-bodied, hugely deep, and massively concentrated. Bright red-ruby. Nose initially dominated by nutty oak, but exploded with aeration to show black cherry, woodsmoke, flint, mulch and spices. Broad, rich, layered and sweet, with rich flavors of spices and underbrush. This really saturates the palate with soil and mineral tones, with the sweetness building impressively. Finishes with broad, dusty, rather suave tannins. (ST)
