A large-scaled, ample wine, the 2015 Le Thil, 100% Merlot from argillo-calcaire-rich soils in Pessac, offers notable depth and texture. Stone fruit, tobacco, mint and cinnamon are pushed forward in this succulent, juicy red. Silky tannins and a broad, creamy finish add to the wine's considerable near and medium-term appeal. This is a strong showing from proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard, who are best known for the wines they make at their flagship property, Smith Haut Lafitte. (AG)
*Barrel Tasting* Offers a fresh feel to the plum and blackberry fruit. Shows ample structure but remains rounded in feel. (Web Only—2016)
The 2015 Le Thil, which is pure Merlot picked at the end of September to maintain freshness in the wine, offers an almost "sexy" bouquet of strawberry jam, fresh dates and raspberry preserve. The palate has a slightly chalky texture on the entry. Moderate depth with good tension, it has a touch of hardness towards the granitic finish that will dissipate by the time it is in bottle. For a pure Merlot, it has a broody personality, so perhaps afford it 1-2 years in bottle before broaching. (NM)
