This Moueix-owned premier grand cru classé property quietly goes about producing great wines. The 2000 is a complete success, with its aromas of red berry fruits and sweet wood, its flavors cedar and truffles alongside the fine, elegant tannins. It will age slowly and reveal layers of complexity over the years. (RV)
This is classy, offering alluring mulled plum and blackberry fruit notes lined with charcoal-edged tannins that soften nicely through the tobacco leaf— and black tea—infused finish. There's still some briary energy here too, so while lovely now, there's no rush. (Web-2016) (JM)
Amazingly youthful dark ruby. Deep, very pure aromas of dark plum, blackcurrant, violet and cherry jam. Dense, rich and suave, with multilayered flavors of bitter chocolate, fresh blackcurrant, licorice and coffee. Finishes very long and balanced, with silky tannins that avoid the astringency of some other Saint-Emilions of the 2000 vintage. Another great wine, perhaps just a little less complex than the 1998, showcasing great inner-mouth perfume and energy thanks to lively acidity, something that Berrouet feels is due to the calcaire soil. "It is also one of the biggest and most structured Magdelaines I remember," he noted. The 2000 vintage was characterized by a very large crop and a fairly rainy first part of the year, but very dry weather during the second half lead to considerable hydric stress, especially on the Right Bank. Mid crimson. The opposite of flashy. The nose needs to be coaxed out of the glass, but the results are worth it. Great finesse with a notable charge of neat tannins underneath fruitcake fruit. This needs a lot of time, but all the ingredients are there. 18/20 points.
Like most Magdelaines, this wine builds in increments rather than blasts from the glass. A worthy rival to the great 1998, the 2000 Magdelaine has a deep ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of mulberries, black currants, and jammy cherry notes intermixed with mineral, licorice, and a hint of subtle toast. This wine is sweet, expansive, and dense, with the gorgeous fruit hiding some relatively elevated tannin. (RP)
