K&L Notes

The Verquiere estate has been passed down from father to son for many generations and is now managed by brothers Romain and Thibaut Chamfort. Following age-old traditions and sustainable practices, the estate was recently certified organic. The Cotes du Rhone is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, grown on chalky clay soils with loads of large pebbles in the vineyards. Verquiere recently returned to us after a long hiatus and we are pleased to have them back.

It’s always a pleasure to revisit a wine that left most of us drop-jawed over the price/quality ratio a few years back, and even more so with the assurance of an absolutely stunning vintage in the Rhône in 2015. Bursting with youthful, exuberant red cherry and blackberry fruit on the nose, with an engaging midweight palate that harmonizes the fruit flavors, adding touches of licorice, flint, florality and light pepper to the mix, this organically grown beauty demands your loyalty. Pair with nicely-marinated mushroom, bell pepper and lamb kebabs!

Some of my favorite everyday drinking reds, besides those that are from Rosso di Montalcinos, Crianza Riojas, and the red blends from the Lanquidoc, are the Cotes du Rhones from the producers from the various locations of the Rhone Valley. In the vast majority of the Cotes Du Rhone productions from these fabulous estates are some absolutely wonderful wines to drink near-term at ridiculously low, “cheap” prices. The 2015 (a great vintage in the Rhone Valley, by the way) Verquiere is a perfect example of this, providing a medium-deep ruby colored wine with an opulent aroma loaded with white pepper, anise, cranberry, to violet characteristics with just a touch of slate-like, forest floor mineral notes. Produced from 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, the fruit presentation on the palate of this Gem is bright, fresh, nicely balanced, well-integrated, and just plain enjoyable on the palate and in its long, fairly complex finish. Rusty loves this bargain Gem for everyday consumption and has demanded that I bring home cases of it to enjoy over the course of the next three to six years. GREAT VALUE! DON’T MISS IT! ***** 14.0% ABV *****
    Drink from 2016 to 2021
