We taste a lot of Cabernet here at K&L, simply because we're living in California where Cabernet is king. Given the fact that I may taste 30-40 different Cabs every week, it takes something special to stand out from that voluminous line-up. The Carpe Diem isn't only a stand out, it's a value to boot. Twenty dollar Cabernet never gets old, but when it's as soft, nuanced, and graceful as the 2013 Carpe Diem it's worth casing up. This isn't big, oaky, or in-your-face Cabernet. It's elegant, polished, and restrained in character and it drinks like a $30-$40 bottle. That all makes sense when you learn it comes from the Dominus team, but it's still striking to taste. If you were to put this in a blind tasting with 100 other Cabernets between $15 and $25, I think the Carpe Diem wins unanimously.
