Tasting Notes

Stephane Vedeau is the proprietor/winemaker behind critical darling Les Fermes du Mont. In 2010, Vedeau added Clos Bellane from the Côtes du Rhône-Village Valreas to his portfolio. Valreas is the northernmost of the Village level Côtes du Rhônes and Stephane's vineyards sit above 400 meters. This cooler climate and higher exposition lead to bright and vibrant Rhone wines that challenge the notion of big and jammy southern French reds. These are fresh fruit filled and harmoniously balanced wines. The Petite Bellane is young vines Syrah produced using native yeasts, no SO2 during fermentation and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Purity defined! (Keith Mabry, K&L Rhône buyer)

“Wines are made in the vineyard,” and perhaps that is why winemaker and owner Stéphane Vedeau devotes so much time to tasting the fruit he cultivates from vine to harvest through fermentation. As he recently remarked, “It’s the best way to catch the nuances in the evolution of the wines.” Such respect is reflected in every bottle of this youthful Syrah-based blend, flush with cool climate, savory black fruit and layers of spice and light toast, all held together by fine acidity.

This is brimming with the aromas of freshly crushed raspberry confiture…very rich fruit and the acid to back it up. This is likely due to its unusually high Syrah content for a southern Rhone wine. There’s a nice toastiness from the oak and its light-bodied nature makes it especially “mid-week quaffable.” The strong acid makes it a great food wine and a fantastic value.

This wine is absolutely delicious and seems to capture much more of the Syrah than you typically find in a Cotes du Rhone. It's bursting with black pepper, dark savory fruit, and a meatiness that's practically begging for BBQ. But that's not to say it's heavy handed or tannic. There's loads of dark fruit underneath all that spice, making this more like a St-Joseph than your standard Grenache-based CdR. It's a serious deal, especially if--like I do--you find this scratches more of a Northern Rhone itch.
