Aged for 16 months in small barrels and bottled unfiltered, the 2011 Spätburgunder Rechtenbacher displays clear, deep and ripe cherry and dark berry aromas with some floral notes. Full-bodied, quite rich and powerful, this is a quite sweet and creamy textured, well structured Pinot with an intense aftertaste. The tannins are ripe but present, and still somewhat dry. Weingut Friedrich Becker, today directed by father Friedrich and son Fritz, is well known for its top class Pinot Noirs. However, the white wines have become terribly good here in the recent years, especially Riesling and Pinot Blanc. These are excellent efforts from the calcareous family vineyards that are located in Schweigen-Rechtenbach on this side and beyond the French/Alsatian border. (SR)
