K&L Notes

In addition to collaborating on four acres of fruit in Brouilly, Michel and Robert Perroud took over their father's winemaking estate in Colgny, a family tradition that goes back seven generations all the way to the French Revolution! Over time they've made a few changes to that family legacy, investing in new rootstock, planting additional varietals like chardonnay, pinot noir, and viognier, as well as making a committed effort to organic and sustainable farming.

It is really a delight to find Cru Beaujolais available on the market like this old vine production. Nearly fifty years ago, the French seriously considered ripping out the Gamay vineyards in Southern Burgundy because wine sales from that area, for many reasons, had virtually come to a halt. Regardless what you feel about the nouveau wines of Beaujolais, that evolution saved the Gamay vineyards of Beaujolais. Many producers have returned, since then, to making Gamay in the fashion that it was created fifty-plus years ago, much like its clonal parent of Pinot Noir is produced in the heart of Burgundy. This villages Cru is a perfect example as to how the wines from Beaujolais use to be made. Medium ruby in color, the aromatics are distinctive and pronounced with upfront strawberry to clove-like notes with an obvious mild cedary oak {yes, some barrel aging took place} background note, The palate is bright, balanced, yet rich, reductive, and subtle, with silky, very fine tannins and a finish that is long and deep. This Gem would give many villages Burgundy a great run for their money, and, according to Rusty, will be one of our house reds for the next couple of years. A K&L Wine Merchants' Direct Import. A WONDERFUL BEAUJOLAIS BUY! ***** 11.0% TO 14.0% ABV *****

This is very polished and silky Brouilly. "Vieilles Vignes" cuvee is slightly fuller bodied and juicier that "Amethyste" cuvee with darker fruit and richer texture. It's absolutely seamless and glides on the palate from start to finish. It's been awhile since I've had such well-rounded Beaujolais that is easy to enjoy on its own and it can also stand up to grilled meats. Think backyard BBQ this summer!

This wine just explodes in your mouth with dark cassis fruit, anise, mineral notes, and a juiciness that speaks to the careful vineyard management by the Perroud brothers. For the price, I would put the VV along side the best red wine deals in the store from anywhere. There's a freshness underneath all that fruit and secondary complexity that accents and highlights the acidity. If you still think Beaujolais is just that supermarket fruit juice you see every November, this bottle should be mandatory in your education. There's a very serious world of "cru" Beaujolais beyond the limitations of the carbonic "nouveau". And we're offering a great example of that seriousness for a very serious price.

This was perhaps my favorite new Beaujolais to arrive this year, and a perfect wine to get into for the holidays. Rich tart cranberry and ripe cherry are balanced some minerality and texture. Soft and rich on the palate there is lovely touch of tannin and enough acid to help drive the finish. Tis the season of Beaujolais and seeing as this is under $ 15 there is no reason not to stock up on it for all Holiday dinner needs.

Baked cherry fruit, crushed flowers, granite minerality and a trace of iron form the personality of this bottle from a great vintage for Beaujolais. This "Old Vines" bottling is somewhat beefy and chewy, which enhances its hearty nature.

Huge cranberry fruit with just the right amount of tartness and a velvety finish--this is a more serious release from Les Freres Perroud, lush without losing any of its welcome minerality. Complex Gamay from 65-year-old vines, all for barely $15?! A holiday win.

Tis’ the season for family, turkey and Beaujolais! Here’s a super-crowd-pleasing, fruity and mineral-driven top value pick for Thanksgiving festivities from brothers Perroud. Made in tribute to their father, this expression is vibrant with forward, bright, ripe, red fruit that has lush texture and a streak of granite-like minerality that shines through beautifully. Cheerful, bright and ready to drink – wine doesn’t get easier or more enjoyable to share than this!

What a phenomenal Beaujolais value! This wine is full, and rich, showcasing the strength of the vintage, but without losing the elegant mineral backbone so classic in Brouilly. Deep black and red berry fruit shows on the palate, with very soft, ripe tannin and pleasant weight. Overall a great buy, and should be perfect with a Thanksgiving meal.

This 100% Gamay Noir wine comes from a 4 acre vineyard where the average age of the vines are 65 years old. Soil type is clay and red granite sand. This is really a serious Brouilly which shows wonderful fruit, a juicy, lush texture and finishes with spicy ruby red fruits and mineral hints. A nice peak into the quality of the 2015s!
