The exceptional rums from R.L. Seale & Co. Ltd are distilled at the Foursquare Rum Distillery in St Philip Barbados. This unique distillery is one of four on the island and produces some of the Caribbean's finest rums. The Master Blender/distiller over there is Richard Seale and while Mr. Seale seems to be quite a staunch purist when it comes to the addition of flavor additives and finishing sugars that are ubiquitous throughout the rum industry, he does believe that rum is a world class product that deserves to be aged in world class casks. The idea to introduce new and unique flavors through cask aging is not a new one, see ALL scotch EVER, but it's not something we see happening regularly in the rum world. Here we have more of a double maturation than a finishing really as this nine year old rum spent its first three years in used American oak before being introduced into fresh port pipes for a further 6 years. The result is something utterly unique and totally transfixing. The sweet grass notes of the rum play perfectly against the ripe fruitiness of the port wine. Texturally quite rich, despite being 80 proof, but without that syrupy glycerol note that is the telltale sign of adulterated rum. A true picture of the future of rum and a great value considering quality and care that went into creating this special rum.
