A barrel sample of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot) reveals textbook notes of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, licorice and fruitcake, a stunningly rich, long finish and a beautiful, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel. It should drink well for 15+ years. One of my favorite Napa estates, proprietors Carol and Michael Marks own 16 acres on a gentle, west-facing slope in Yountville. They have long used the services of French winemaking consultant, Philippe Melka, to produce their two terrific red wines. (RP)
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is darker, richer and more powerful than the Red Wine, but it is also much more tannic. Mocha, plums, black cherries, new leather and licorice are all quite forward. The wine closes down significantly on the mid palate and through the finish. Even within the context of the vintage, the Cabernet is especially unyielding. (AG)
