This one caught me off guard, as I wasn't anticipating tasting such an impressive red from the island of Lipari, located off the coast of Sicily. Over 80 percent of Caravaglio's Corinto vines are at least 150 years old, as the volcanic soils prevent vine disease and the maritime winds keep the vines healthy. This rich and deeply flavored red boasts waves of plum and dark berry fruit, exotic spices and mild ripe tannins that round it out. It's a lot of wine for the price and a rare treat from one of the world's unspoiled isles.
