Tart black cherry meets plum, strawberry and clove, while softened tannins belie the wine’s overall density and sense of generosity. A smoky waft of cigar amplifies the power and sinewy nature of the fullbodied wine, which is ready to lie down for a rest. Enjoy best 2020 through 2024. *Cellar Selection* (VB)
Shafer also makes one of the better Merlots. The 2014 Merlot includes 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and is a beauty. Mocha and chocolaty notes intermixed with red cherry, plum and blacker fruits jump from the glass of this perfumed and fragrant style of Merlot. It is medium to full-bodied, exceptionally pure and rich and should drink beautifully over the next 10-12 years of life. (RP)
Shafer is one of Napa Valley's best oiled machines. Year after year the wines deliver the goods in a rich, sumptuous style that defines the very essence of contemporary Napa Valley at its very best. Shafer really shines in 2013 and 2014. Quite frankly, it's hard to go wrong with any of these wines. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, menthol, licorice and gravel are beautifully delineated in Shafer's 2014 Merlot. This is a somewhat brisk, linear style, but it works nicely. Savory overtones add aromatic intensity and lift throughout. There is plenty to like, but readers should expect a slightly more reserved Merlot than is the norm here. (AG)
