Just delicious. This wine has an elasticity to its tannins that makes it as texturally fascinating as it is rich in flavor. It glows with an inner warmth, emanating flavors of wildflower honey, strawberries, golden citrus, toast and cream, and buzzes with energy, giving no hint that it is a 50-year-old wine. Compellingly drinkable on its own, it could also pair with a range of foods, starting with a shrimp and lobster bisque.
Offers a spicy aroma, with zesty flavors of apricot, citrus and apple that feature plenty of pastry notes. Pure and direct, featuring a finish loaded with white chocolate, hazelnut and slate accents. Powerfully fresh. Drink now through 2040. (KM)
The 1962 Cossart Gordon Bual was bottled in 2015 and constitutes a run of 1,104 bottles. It has a slightly lighter color than I was expecting, though the aromatics do not disappoint, understated at the beginning with dried fig, cardamom, mandarin and subtle hazelnut scents. The palate is very refined, imbued with an almost sorbet-like freshness on the entry, harmonious and refined with just the right amount of acidity (ten grams per liter) threaded through the orange, caramelized pear and smoked walnut aromas. There is great length here and a long, persistent finish that seals the deal. This is another superb release from the Blandy family - one for those who prefer their Madeira more nuanced in style.
