The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint is intense and dark, but also offers terrific freshness. Dark red stone fruit, chocolate, spice, menthol and rose petals are all pushed forward. The 2014 could use a few years to soften, but it is absolutely delicious today. This is a fabulous wine for the money. (AG)
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint hails from six separate sources in Napa Valley and is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. The wine has an opaque purple color and notes of graphite, blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as touches of white chocolate, underbrush and licorice. It is medium to full-bodied, with terrific purity and a supple, fruit-forward, luscious style that is characteristic of this endearing vintage. Anticipated maturity: now-2032. Robin Lail is one of the true icons of Napa Valley. Her great grand-uncle Gustave Niebaum was one of the pioneers for Napa Valley viticulture as well as the founder of Inglenook Vineyards. Her family’s fascinating history dates back to 1879, and Robin can truly boast of having worked with the best professionals and superstars of Napa Valley, from Robert Mondavi and Bill Harlan to Christian Moueix at Dominus. However, she’s on her own now with Lail Vineyards and has produced a bevy of extraordinary wines with the help of her wine consultant Philippe Melka. There are two pricing tiers, with the Blueprint wines the less expensive wines aimed at consumers and the restaurant trade, and the more limited production Georgia Sauvignon Blanc and J. Daniel cuvées of Cabernet Sauvignon for connoisseurs with thick wallets. (RP)
*One Star* Rich enough and ripe enough as to suggest a bit of excess, this full-bodied effort never stints on depth and focused black cherry and cassis fruit, and its supportive oak lends a further air of more-than-adequate stuffing. Supple to start and somewhat tannic at this point, the wine is sure to lose a fair bit of its rustic markers with three to six years in bottle, and it has the construction for aging twice that long.
