A balanced glass of red with blueberry, blackberry and shaved chocolate character. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Blend of 82% merlot, 16% cabernet sauvignon and 2% cabernet franc. From the family that own Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion. Drink or hold.
This is the generic Bordeaux from the Domaine Clarence Dillon. When they first told me about this, I thought it was probably not the best idea in the world, but the quality of the wine speaks for itself. I think they have been right on the money with what they have achieved with this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc. Deep ruby/purple, with notes of Graves-like scorched earth, charcoal and blackcurrants, this wine is dense, medium-bodied, quite supple and rich. Despite its precociousness, it clearly has capacity, with this depth and structure, to age 7-10 years. (RP)
The 2012 Clarendelle is Clarence Dillon's entry-level red and is made from purchased fruit. Medium in body and open-knit, the Clarendelle is a delicious wine to drink now and over the next few years, while the fruit retains its juiciness. Hints of sweet tobacco, dried, herbs, tobacco and smoke add the closing shades of nuance. (AG)
This is a soft, fruity wine with comfortable tannins and bold black fruits. It is smoothly textured with just a hint of dryness. Now maturing well, this attractive wine should be ready from 2017. (RV)
