Barrel Number #2525 is definitely the brighter of the two Belle Meade Casks. It doesn’t have the savory or sour quality that we sometimes get with MGP whiskey, instead a big nose burnt sugar, sweet tea, over ripe mango and dried flowers. The palate is not as sweet as the nose might suggest medium bodied with a deep dark red cherry on the entry. The tea component takes hold mid-palate for a lovely dry spicy finish. With a bit of air this exquisite whiskey takes on some truly old-school character, developing red fruit, black tea, tobacco leaf and exotic wood components. I have no doubt that this will be remembered as one of the year’s best finds.
