The legend continues with this exceptional 2014 offering. It is totally seductive on the nose displaying dark plum, blueberry, violet and game characters with nuances of cedar and spice. Tannins are in fine and in abundance, and frames the wine seamlessly. Built to last, this is a must for syrah fans and collectors. At its best: 2018 to 2034.
Spice - Lots and lots of spice here. There's loads of white pepper as well that's dusted across raspberries and plums. The oak is played just right, really letting the fruit take center stage. The palate has plenty of textural interest, ripe plums and red cherries and fine yet sturdy tannins that carry understated power. This is an absolute beauty! Drink now to 2025+.
Very dark, black-hued purple-red, very youthful in appearance. The nose is beautifully refined and intensely perfumed with tightly bound aromas of ripe black and dark red berried fruits intermingling with black pepper, Asian spices and fragrant dark red and violet florals. The freshness and lifted aromatics are features. Medium-bodied, refreshing vibrant and lively black berry and dark raspberry fruit form a refined, but tight core. The fruit is layered by black pepper, soy sauce and Asian spices, lifted by violet florals. The mouthfeel is juicy and succulent, the vitality enhanced by fine acidity which along with very fine-grained tannins provide cut, energy and linearity. This is fruit-focussed, and the flavours carry to very long and sustained, aromatic and luscious finish. This Syrah highlights richness, fragrance and vitality. It will develop over the next 6-8 years. 25% MS clone, 35% 470, 25% 174 and 15% Chave clone, the fruit 75% from the ‘Bullnose’ and 25% from the neighbouring ‘Isosceles’ vineyards, fully destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc. the wine spending 28 days on skins and aged 15 months in 37% new French oak barriques.
A dense, classy Syrah with violet, pepper, liquorice and dark berry flavours. Elegant wine with nice acidity and plenty of energy. It has a backbone of ripe tannins that promise good ageing potential. A slightly more edgy Syrah than the usual offerings from Hawke’s Bay and all the better for it.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Bullnose Syrah I tried was a tank sample just about to be bottled and released the week I tasted it. It gives notes of ripe crushed cherries, black raspberries, Sichuan pepper and underbrush with quite an earthy undercurrent. Medium-bodied, it has loads of fruit in the mouth, complimented by just enough pepper and spice with a good backbone of very silky tannins and lively acidity carrying off a good long finish.
