Blended of 60% Grenache, 20% Shiraz and 20% Mataro, the 2015 Grenache Shiraz Mataro displays a medium garnet-purple color and nose of baked cherries, raspberry preserves and warm plums with a smoky/chargrill undercurrent and savory touch of yeast extract. Full-bodied with concentrated flavors in the mouth, it has a solid backbone of firm, ripe tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and savory. (LPB)
Proportions are about 70/20/10. 60- to 115-year-old vines. Same winemaking as on all the Powell & Son reds - ie fermented in open concrete vats, aged 12 - 15 in foudres (25 hl in this case). No fining or filtration. 1,000 cases of 12. Deep cherry red. Rich dark bramble fruit. Creamy, rich with a cool depth of fruit - Grenache is the star here. More red fruit on the palate. Very silky and gentle. Really juicy and lightly voluptuous. Deep, long and very easy to drink - you could drink this all evening. (JH)
