Ripe Mirabelle and purple plums dominate the nose, with a notion of intense plum compote. The palate reveals that all of this ripeness is streaked with lively lemon zest, pulling the sumptuous fruit into clearer focus. The finish remains ripe and opulent. (AK)
Picked November 4th and aged for 8 months on its lees, the white golden 2013 Riesling Heiligenstein Erste Lage was imprecise and diffuse on the nose end of August 2014 and quite aggressive in the mouth due to isolated carbonic acid. Four weeks later it showed up much better displaying herbal and somewhat (hazel-) nutty flavors intermixed with white peach and apricot aromas on a serene layer of the characteristic sandstone earthiness of the Heiligenstein. Compared to Eichinger's Gaisberg the Heiligenstein is more fresh, spicy and focused in its expression both on the nose and the tongue. The wine is piquant and mineral and develops a somewhat sweet but intensely fruity palate and length with a stimulating, salty and piquant finish. (SR)
Subtle aromas of vineyard peach, laurel and white pepper. At once deep and elegant, with flavors of persimmon and anise, the 2013 Heiligenstein is light on its feet. This nutty yet lively Riesling shows appealing complexity, finishing with sandstone earthiness and herbal spices. (JBP)
