A great bottle of Cabernet for any occasion for those who want a fantastic Californian without breaking the bank - its a big wine, but the acidity and pepper spices really balance it out. Tannins are fresh, but not grippy. Easy going, but full of surprises as it carries itself with many more nuances than the price suggests.

The first time I tasted the 2014 Smith and Hook Cabernet, I was blown away by how layered and accessible this inexpensive little Central Coast-appellated Cab was in comparison to wines two or even three times its price. Recently, I tasted the current 2015 vintage and was furthered impressed by how the ripe and approachable fruit up front was balanced by a focused core of acidity and structure. Fragrances of black cherry, cola and toasted coffee beans segue to a generous and lush palate full of sweet mocha, vanilla and a subtle hint of minerality. While the price tag may denote a connotation for everyday drinking, the wine inside dictates a bottle worthy of giving away to your favorite loved one or cellaring away for a special day.

It's rare to find a Cabernet that's both ripe and characteristically Cabernet in flavor for less than twenty bucks, but when you add in all of the mineral and earthy elements that explode out of the glass in the 2015 Smith & Hook release, it's easy to see why this wine is getting a lot of attention. Those of you who swear by sub-$20 reds will want to squirrel some of this away.

This is a fantastic bottle of Central Coast Cabernet for everyday drinking. There is an attractive richness on the palate but remains in balance with good structure and acidity. Robust coffee and oak is paired with blackberry compote, vanilla and a hint of graphite. For the price, this is as good as it gets!

Under the Hahn Family Wines portfolio, the Smith and Hook Cab is a ton of wine for under $15! This Central Coast sourced Cabernet is loaded with ripe, juicy, slightly toasty fruit. Lingering in the back are hints of licorice, vanilla bean and mocha. This kind of reminds me of Justin Cabernet back in the days!
