A great year, one of the best of the 1980's, this 1987 Martinez Lacuesta Reserva is drinking wonderfully now. Cocoa powder, nut shells, eucalyptus and some underlying fruit aromas lead to a palate that shows more fruit, of a more intense and sweeter quality, than the nose would suggest. There is volume, persistence, minerality and poise, everything I want in a fully mature Rioja. At under $50, I highly recommend it.
