K&L Notes

A distinctive style of wine from Valpolicella in the Veneto, often referred to as the poor man's Amarone. Rather than making wine from dried grapes, as they do Amarone, Rispasso uses an ancient technique where a wine is refermented with the skins and pips of pressed Amarone or Recioto, adding depth and character. Remo Farina's is then aged in 90% Slavonian oak barrels and 10% French and American oak for six months. The resulting wine is leathery and earthy, with plum and cherry fruit, ginger and peppery spice, and a subtle undercurrent of anise. A great value!

The aromatics on this wine are so complex, a blend of spiced cherry, ripe plum with hints of cinnamon. On the palate the wine is supple, smooth and elegant all at the same time, the aromatics from the nose are replayed, perhaps intensified yet the wine never loses its balance. The finish is balanced, fresh and light for a wine with so much flavor. A perfect accompaniment to roast chicken or pasta dishes.

While some may have valid concerns of the 2014 vintage in Valpolicella due to heavy rain and hail, the Remo Farina can put those concerns to rest. In addition to the Farina family's vineyards being at a higher elevation, which kept them open to the gentle summer winds keeping the vines dryer than some, meticulous grape selection kept any botrytis affected grapes out of the pack. Their great positioning and hard effort paid off and created an excellent 2014 Ripasso with an expressive cherry cola and mocha nose and elegant richness on the palate. The time in European oak adds structure and spice to the already intriguing wine.

Valpolicella has undergone an amazing transformation from the 60s Bolla version with a red-checked tablecloth to the suave and ultra-hip wine region. This ripasso is a midway point between simple and fresh and the power and size of the Amarone taking the best from both. A wine to drink straight from the bottle, with a straw or with roasted rabbit, or complex pasta dishes. Rockin' Ripasso!

Claudio Farina's wines have always stressed elegance and purity and this latest release doesn't disappoint. Pure spiced cherry fruit and pleasant cedar aromas translate much the same on the palate where the wine delivers bold flavors with a hint of raisins on the finish. Considering the quality and price of this outstanding Ripasso, it certainly over-delivers.
