Tasting Notes

We were first introduced to the wines of Eric Cottat a few years back. He was brought to our attention by one of our long-time friends and winemakers in Sancerre and we brought in a small amount as that was all we were allowed to take at the time. Eric is a one-man show and only produces a small amount of wines each vintage for family, friends, and close customers, and then sells the rest of his fruit off to other eager producers in the region. This Sancerre blanc is always invigorating and fresh, with lemony citrus aromas and flavors accented by delicate white flowers. The palate is full and fresh, with balanced acidity and minerality on the finish. This a style of wine that keeps your palate fresh and alive. Although easy to drink, it has complexity and intrigue up and down the aromatic and palate. You'll want another after the first one has disappeared. Open and enjoy tonight with seafood or fish dishes.

My visit last year with Eric Cottat was brief but memorable. He has become one of our most desirable producers in Sancerre with each release selling out shortly after it arrives. Eric works his vineyards sustainably with an unerring eye for detail and minimal intervention in the winemaking. This is our last call on the 2016 Eric Cottat Sancerre with its profile of grapefruit, lemon zest, gooseberry and chalky minerality. It is quite pleasurable with its vibrant acidity and crunchy finish.

One of the friendliest Sancerres that K&L sells. It always has a touch more fruit and is a shade less biting, but it is Sancerre so there is crisp acidity, talc-y minerality and cool citrusy fruit. Always great with a meal but not so austere that it cannot be enjoyed as an aperitif.

Eric Cottat is always my favorite DI Sancerre we carry year in and year out, and unfortunately, it always seems to be the one that sells out the fastest so I may not be alone in my opinion. The balance of fruit, minerality, and acid are always in spectacular balance with his wines and they tend to go with everything. The 2016 vintage shows more a little leaner fruit than the previous vintage which makes me super happy. This is a serious and seriously good wine especially given the price.

This is a lovely wine from the Loire Valley in France. It is full of lively acidity, pretty aromatics of delicate white flowers, and fresh squeezed citrus. A great paring with fresh shellfish.

Even in a classic vintage like 2016 this bottling always seems a bit more generous and open than most other Sancerres. This is filled with lemon blossom, honeyed citrus, crushed melon and a mouth watering finish of talc-like mineral. A best buy for sure.
