(aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, 20% of them new) Bright yellow. Powerful, mineral-accented Meyer lemon, pear and nectarine scents show excellent clarity and complicating suggestions of fennel and toasty lees. Minerally and precise in the mouth, offering concentrated orchard and citrus fruit flavors and deeper suggestions of buttery brioche and honeydew melon. Shows impressive depth as well as energy and finishes silky, gently sweet and very long, displaying a suave floral nuance. (JR)
Offering up fragrant peach and ripe pear notes with underlying hints of salted almonds, baking bread and beeswax, the 2015 Chardonnay Rincon Vineyard coats the palate in toasty flavors, featuring a lively backbone and long finish with some mineral coming through. (LPB)
As group, the Talley Chardonnays impress as being fairly deep and still somewhat tight, and, if this one is both, it conveys the greatest fruity volume and complexity of the bunch. It is rich and substantial but never once suggests heaviness, and its well-married mix of ripe apples, sweet spice and creamy oak hangs on and on at the finish. Its ample, neatly fit acidity contributes the kind of brightness and backbone that guarantee good things ahead, and, even if there is plenty to like in the near term, we plan on waiting for another year or two.
