K&L Notes

Though growing up in a wine producing family, Gerard Bertrand's path to top winemaker is a little more circumspect. At the age of 19 he became a top rugby player in the French leagues where he had a distinguished career for 17 years, even serving as captain of Stade Francais. During his career as a player, he came back to wine following his father's untimely death. For a time, Bertrand was both vigneron and player. After his retirement from rugby, his focus came primarily to wine and pushing himself to become one of the Languedoc-Roussillon's most prominent producers. He now owns and manages over a dozen estates and vineyards all throughout the appellation making some of the most rewarded and recognized wines from the region. Oh, and he pushes them to all be farmed organically and biodynamically! No small feat, for sure. The Corbieres is one of his flagship wines as this was his home region. Always polished and full of southern Rhone-styled fruit, this Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre blend captures the silky elegance of Corbieres with its lightly rustic edge.

Former rugby player, Gerard Bertrand, scores the goal with this forward drinking but pleasantly polished Corbieres. I love a lot of Corbieres wines for their seamless fruit and light rusticity. This was originally Grenache country but Bertrand focuses the cuvee towards the upstart Syrah, which has proven to be a highly viable variety for the region. The Syrah lends dark berry fruit to complement the cherry of the very present Grenache. Fine tannins and a supple sweetness are balanced by the earthy meatiness of Mourvedre. It all comes together as a harmonious blend, over-delivering on the palate and finished drinking like a much more expensive Rhone. Serve this juicy red with Mediterranean fare like roasted leg of lamb or smoked pork shoulder.

Aromatically, there is a slight gaminess right off the bat. Dark fruit tones bum-rush the palate. Yet, there is a lightness to this wine. I was shocked to find it much more balanced than most of the wines I try from Southwest France. Lighter in body, some interesting woody notes, not even a hint of bitterness. This is definitely a wine that screams "Drink now". Even the acid seems to meld seamlessly into the wine. It's an easy-drinker for sure, but there's a whole lot going on in this glass.

I was pleasantly surprised by the elegance of this Corbieres. It has the perfumed floral notes of violets and lilacs that remind me of wines from places like Gigondas. Concentrated flavors of blackberries, cassis and anise and a juicy mouthfeel, this red blend is an excellent value to stock up on for any occasion.
