Dark purple. Heady black and blue fruit, incense, vanilla and olive aromas show excellent clarity and are sharpened by a smoky mineral flourish. Sweet, seamless and impressively concentrated, offering bitter cherry, blueberry and floral pastille flavors that show a shockingly light touch for the heft. Finishes on an echoing blue fruit note, with smooth tannins and strong, spice-tinged tenacity. (JR)
Savory pepper and raw-beef notes mark on the nose of this tightly wound bottling, as well as nut brittle and teriyaki aromas. Plum skins, lavender and carpaccio show on the sip alongside a wash of flowers and herbs, from lavender to rosemary. The tannins are mouthcoating and need time to develop. My favorite in the lineup was the 100% Syrah 2013 Walking Boss, which comes from the Shadow Canyon and Terra Bella vineyards in Paso Robles. Fermented with 25% stems and aged 22 months in 70% new French oak, it's a beautiful Syrah that offers textbook notes of spice, black raspberries, bacon fat and hints of cassis in its full-bodied, layered and elegant style. It's impeccably balanced and has fine tannin on the finish, all suggesting it should evolve gracefully through 2023. Made by Giovanni Grandineti, all three of these latest releases are outstanding.
