The spirited Mistral whips, darts and slices through the southern French countryside, turning baby strollers into kites, tossing hapless hounds skyward, upending carts and their attached donkeys.... OK, a bit of hyperbole, but this strong wind works wonders in the vineyard, scouring the vines of unwelcome pests and spores, and generating healthy, luscious fruit, the benefits of which are ultimately found in your glass of wine. One of our best-selling Cotes du Rhones year in and year out, the Esprit, with its seamless blend of dark, savory Syrah and hearty, ripe and generous Grenache, expresses the dynamism and sheer potential of the Rhone Valley in a banner year. A good pairing with a bowl of Texas Chili or barbecued spare ribs!

Black fruit and liquorice are the first thing to hit the nose, and give way to a strong core of black pepper. A nice savory note a little further down. At 14% ABV, I’m really surprised by the balance in this wine. It leans a bit towards big and fruity, but then takes a step back. A vivacious acid element helps put the fruit in place, with just a touch of heat at the end. Tannins are restrained, and not overpowering—present, but accessible. Seriously, why would anyone ever spend $10 on a grocery store wine when you can drink a delicious wine like this with quality, history, and sense of place?

The stunning quality and structure for this sub-$10 red is evidence of the strength of the vintage in the Rhone Valley. The fruit is, as expected, ripe and rich, but it is perfectly framed by signature Rhone dried herbs and spice and perfectly smooth and integrated tannins. Very impressive for its price-point.

A recent visit to the northern Rhone was one of the great highlights of our buying trip especially once we visited Delas. They have some extraordinary holdings for the high end bottlings like their famed St-Joseph and Hermitage wines. The attention to detail is amazing with tiny lots of grapes all fermented individually in a variety of vessels ranging from oak tanks, to concrete vats and stainless steel. This attentiveness allows Delas to make great top tier wines but it also delivers some of the best value wines in the market. These mico-lots are compiled together to generate what still remains one of the true standouts for cost to quality Cotes du Rhone. The wine is always Syrah dominant and the 2015 vintage has given this grape some of its most favorable weather conditions to show its best stuff. The wine is plump and juicy with roasted black plum and fig flavors but maintains notes of tobacco and pepper. This thrilling little red delivers a lot of character for not a lot of money and our price is one of the best in the west.
