Another rocking wine from this team, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape doesn’t disappoint and gives up loads of kirsch, cassis, licorice, meat juice, licorice and roasted herbs. Made from a blend of mostly Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvedre that was brought up in foudre, barrels and concrete, it’s a fruit-filled, medium to full-bodied, seamless and beautifully Provencal effort to drink over the coming decade. Dark and winey, with a lovely mouthfeel to the layers of raspberry coulis, plum sauce and blackberry confiture, supported by alluring graphite and licorice notes. The long, tarry-edged finish opens nicely in the glass. Drink now through 2022. (JM)
Opaque ruby. Aromas of ripe blackberry and candied flowers show good clarity and spicy lift. Supple, sweet and seamless, offering juicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of cola. Fine-grained tannins shape the long, floral finish of this rich yet lively wine. (JR)
