From the Morey sector of Bonnes Mares. Lightly toasted nose with raspberries and cherries. Rich and rounded palate with lavish fruit, without being heavy-handed or extracted. The tannins are ripe and the acidity keen and persistent, giving the wine its elegance and poise. (SB)
(from a 1.60 ha parcel on the Morey side where the soil is more white than red). A discreet application of wood easily allows the liqueur-like dark currant aromas that are liberally cut with earth and spice nuances to be appreciated. Otherwise there is superb richness to the full-bodied, powerful and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that possess a velvety and mouth coating palate feel, all wrapped in a gorgeously complex and persistent finish. This isn’t quite as classy as the Bèze but it brings a number of other attributes to the table. Note well though that this isn’t even remotely going to be an early drinker so plenty of patience will be necessary, indeed I would go so far as to say that it would be pointless to even think about opening a bottle before its 15th birthday. 2040+
The 2015 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is more expressive on the nose compared to the Clos-de-Beze, as you would expect, with detailed blueberry and blackberry aromas, a light peaty scent all with fine delineation. The palate is very well balanced with crisp black fruit, blood orange and savory/meaty notes underneath. There is good energy on display here and it will need 4-5 years to fully assimilate the new oak on the finish. Very fine. (NM)
Bright medium red. Like a wine from another planet following the Clos Saint-Jacques and Clos de Bèze, offering aromas of black raspberry, wild herbs, tar and chocolate. Mouthfilling and solid but less expressive in the mouth than the top Gevreys, with saline minerality, spices and a suggestion of chocolatey ripeness dominating in the early going. This tactile, chewy wine boasts serious but well-integrated tannins and terrific savory persistence. All of the top 2015 Bruno Clair clearly showcase their distinctive terroirs. (ST)
