This also displays a generous amount of wood on the ultra-fresh mix of red currant, dark cherry, earth and plenty of floral influence. There is excellent power to the focused, muscular and mineral-driven middle weight plus flavors that terminate in a youthfully austere and hugely persistent finale. This too is very clearly built-to-age and I would recommend not cracking one of these before at least 10 years has passed.
(from Rugiens du Haut, where the soil features a meter of hard white marl over red clay rich in iron): Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Aromas of cassis, iron and underbrush convey an almost metallic minerality. Sappy, fine-grained and suave, with building intensity to its berry and mineral flavors. The wine's distinctive blend of sweet and salty elements is classic Rugiens. Finishes very ripe and long, with refined tannins and terrific energy.
It was a nice segue to the Pommard Rugiens, boasting iron, violet, black currant and blueberry notes backed by a firm, tense structure.
