Tasting Notes

After the last few years I think just about everyone has heard us pontificating about just how good, and how insanely inexpensive, the York Creek wines are. Luckily for us and our thirsty customers Fritz Maytag kept deep cellars over the years and still has plenty of wine for us to sell. After the rousing success of past vintages we just keep reloading because the wines are that good and you keep asking us for more. Our latest find are two wines from 2007, they are 100% Cabernet and are from single blocks on the Estate. These wines were made by Fritz himself and are appropriate for drinking now or cellaring for another number of years. One side note: there are between 60-80 cases each of these and if history tells us anything these will be gone in a matter of days if not hours. Act fast. (Bryan Brick, K&L)

After the last three to four years of offerings of incredibly produced older, aged vintages of Cabernets and Bordeaux-style blends from the many different vineyard blocks, in quantity, from York Creek Vineyards, I have to ask myself, “What was owner, Fritz Maytag, thinking of by stockpiling, in such large amounts, these exceptional vintages of great wines and not selling them following bottling?” Well, whatever was going through his brain at the time, he now has certainly made a ton of our customers as well as most of our K&L wine staff, very happy – my wine cellar and I included. When I first uncorked and poured a glass of this Cabernet, I couldn’t believe just how inky dark and young it appeared to be, particularly with the realization that it was already ten years old. Loaded with blackberry, currant, and cassis fruit in its lush, powerful nose, this broad, concentrated, viscous Cabernet has layers of complex, proportional, yet perfectly balanced flavors with exceptional structure and a long, warm finish. This is a stunning Gem that I honestly believe will easily age another ten to twenty years, but with decanting and airing can be drunk near-term. Not much was produced (only ten barrels) and it will disappear (probably into my cellar) before you can blink an eye. STUNNING VALUE!!! ***** 14.5% ABV *****

York Creek’s label is one that activates some sort of Pavlovian response in me. Where else can you find pre-aged premium Spring Mountain cab for under thirty bucks? And when I write premium, I mean it. Ten years in, this Cab from the Horseshoe Vineyard remains powerful and focused, a mountain cab at its best. Black fruit, graphite, mocha, mint and herbs are dense and well-integrated with oak and enough acid to balance it with freshness. This is a fantastic library release from a legendary vintage.

We've emailed many York Creek wines, featuring multiple vintages and various cuvées over the past several years. Given the across-the-board consistency and deliciousness, I think our customers have reached the same conclusion as we have about these: you need to act fast and buy them before they disappear. There are no $30 California Cabernet that sell as quickly, and the reason is because these were in fact originally destined to sell for $50 (and at this price would be better wine than much of the $50 Napa Cab competition). The Horseshoe Block bottling is a bit broader on the palate, with darker tasting, comparably riper fruit when tasted next to the Track. There's always room in the cellar for Cabs as drinkable as this one.

2007 is a famously ripe vintage in California. The wines have always enjoyed broad appeal. So much so that most were probably drunk up within a few years of release. What fun then to be able to revisit the vintage 10 years on with these wines direct from the cellars at York Creek. The 2007 Horseshoe Block Cabernet is surprisingly youthful at ten years old with still firm tannins and barely a hint of age. Hints of violets on the nose. Richly textured on the palate with plenty of ripeness and sweet, almost candied black fruits.

This is absolutely one of the best values in the store right now for any category. It's almost impossible to find any library wine that tastes as smooth, refined, and fresh as this one, let alone one for under $30. The Horseshoe block shows a lot of deep, polished fruit and its years in bottle have mellowed the tannins and acid to bring this wine to a perfect balance right now. California wine connoisseurs know what a phenomenal vintage 2007 was and this wine is certainly a great example of that incredible harvest.

The 2007 Horseshoe Block is one of the lusher and riper York Creek bottlings we’ve seen recently. For a 10 year old bottling this has shocking depth and freshness with lush wild berry, cassis and even some tones of Mexican cocoa powder. I was floored by the drinkablilty of this wine, it’s great from the minute you pull the cork, and for the value it can not be beat. We are so happy that the massive well of affordable, pre-aged and mountain structured wines we’ve found at York Creek have not yet dried up. (All York Creek wines are unfined and unfiltered and do throw considerable sediment, a decant is greatly recommended for sediment reasons.)

Drinking York Creek is not only a cool way to taste California history, it is one of the few bottlings that one can still get Spring Mountain fruit for a very reasonable price thanks to us buying directly from their warehouse. Red mountain fruit with plenty of minerality showcase a wine that is vibrant and still in it's early drinking days. A strong acid core keeps the wine on the lighter side while promising long aging potential. For those who want to see what a long lived, old school wine ought to taste grab a few of these because it will probably run out quickly.
