Tasting Notes

After the last few years I think just about everyone has heard us pontificating about just how good, and how insanely inexpensive, the York Creek wines are. Luckily for us and our thirsty customers Fritz Maytag kept deep cellars over the years and still has plenty of wine for us to sell. After the rousing success of past vintages we just keep reloading because the wines are that good and you keep asking us for more. Our latest find are two wines from 2007, they are 100% Cabernet and are from single blocks on the estate. These wines were made by Fritz himself and are appropriate for drinking now or cellaring for another number of years. One side note: there are between 60-80 cases each of these and if history tells us anything these will be gone in a matter of days if not hours. Act fast. (Bryan Brick, K&L Domestic wine buyer)

As with its 2007 colleague, “Horseshoe,” this vineyard block produced a deeply colored Cabernet, yet is much more forward and drinking near-term. Spicy, almost sagebrush-like, intermingled with blackberry to plum-like driven fruit notes, all of which is underscored by hints of cedar, mushrooms, and earthiness, this Cabernet carries over nicely to a round, infused, generous mouthfeel, with excellent complexity, fullness, and structure, that leads to a deep, lush, silky finish. Drink this Gem over the course of the next five to eight years while you wait for the “Horseshoe.” Only ten barrels were produced (translation: 25 cases per barrel) EXCELLENT VALUE!!! ***** 14.5% ABV *****
    Drink from 2017 to 2025

The 2007 Track Block is pure, aged, Spring Mountain in all of its power and rustic charm. The wines from Spring Mountain always have a specific signature, for me it is sage and porcini mushroom highlights that play off of the wealth of black fruits and firm, but pliable back-end tannins. I could not think of another Spring Mountain wine that I’ve tasted in the last 5 years that comes close to showing the hallmark traits of the appellation as this wine does. Add the fine polishing that the extended bottle time has added to this wine and there is something special here. This is my new go-to steak wine and it will be for some time, as it has 4-8 years at least left in the bottle. (All York Creek wines are unfined and unfiltered and do throw considerable sediment; a decant is greatly recommended for sediment reasons.)

2007 is a famously ripe vintage in California. The wines have always enjoyed broad appeal. So much so that most were probably drunk up within a few years of release. What fun then to be able to revisit the vintage 10 years on with these wines direct from the cellars at York Creek. The 2007 Track Block Cabernet is just beginning to show its age with aromas of cedar and saddle leather. Still virile though with loads of sweet black fruit along with notes of cassis and black licorice. Fine tannins frame the finish.

The two York Creek blocks we recently received in are from the phenomenal 2007 vintage that California wine lovers will recognize as one of the best in recent history. These wines are produced by a team with decades of experience in the Napa Valley in one of the most coveted areas. The Track block is still showing incredible structure and acidity, which indicates it can age for many more years to come. This wine has greatly benefitted from ten years in bottle and is certainly approachable now with decanting, but will also hold in the cellar. This is an incredible deal for under $30 and is truly one of the best domestic Cab's in the store right now.
    Top Value!

Shows classic SMD & 2007 structure ! AMAZING WINE and PRICE!!! Will drink now with a steak and an hour or so decanting. Will age as well, but only if you can keep your hands off it. BUY,BUY,BUY and don't say I did not warn you after it sells out.

Finally we are getting some more York Creek and I will have to be honest this is one of the best I have tasted. Although this does not quite have the richness that the 2005 vintage from Track had it more than makes up for that with elegance and finesse in my opinion. There is an earthy quality to the nose alongside the dark sweet berry and bramble notes. Good acid keeps the wine fresh and moving forward with long tannins also helping to bring about a long finish. This wine is drinking beautifully right now but could easily go for more years.

We have been encouraging Bryan Brick to keep the York Creek coming, and fortunately for all of us who appreciate real deal, mountain grown Cab, he has done just that. Of the two 2007 York Creek's, this is the one with a bit of a sterner structure; it's delicious now, but probably best served with a grilled steak to best showcase the poised, pitch perfect Cabernet fruit. This is not a Cab that you want to miss.
