No. 12 on Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2017 - *Smart Buys* Rich and supple, this is an explosion of pure, decadent fruit. Floral huckleberry and Chinese five-spice powder aromas open to layered blackberry, dark chocolate and licorice flavors that linger. Drink now through 2026. (TF)
The reds start with the 2015 Zinfandel Old Vine, which comes from many different old-vine vineyards largely based around three farms in Sonoma planted in 1888, 1896 and 1905. In addition, there is a kitchen-sink blend of other old-vine sites as well. Peterson guesses that the average age of the material in the blend is at least 80 years. The bend is 90% Zinfandel and the rest Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache, Carignan, Mataro and a few other eccentric black varieties. This delicious wine shows terrific fruit, loads of steak tartare, ground pepper, black raspberry and blackberry fruits, licorice, creosote and an Amarone-like character. It is dense, full-bodied, vibrant and energized. Drink it over the next 5-6 years if you can wait that long. Everybody should recognize the incredible speed at which Morgan Twain-Peterson has built his Bedrock Wine Co. into a world-class performer. Moreover, few people have done more to preserve and save heritage/ancient-vine vineyards than Peterson. Here is his new lineup of wines that shows his creative Midas touch for coaxing full character out of his diverse terroirs and blends. His commitment to excellence is something to admire. (RP)
The 2015 Old Vine Zinfandel is surprisingly delicate and restrained in this vintage. Sweet red cherry and plum flavors are nicely pushed forward. Silky tannins add to the wine's accessible, open-knit personality. In this vintage, the Zinfandel is bumped up in the blend, and that comes through loud and clear. This is a remarkable set of wines from Morgan Peterson and Chris Cottrell at Bedrock. The 2015 Zinfandel and Zinfandel-based blends are outrageously beautiful. My impression is that the fruit is being picked a bit earlier than in the past, as the wines have more brightness and freshness than was once the norm, and yet they also have plenty of the depth that has been such a signature here since the beginning. Cottrell attributes the increased ability to pick earlier to a greater emphasis on dry farming. Whatever the reason or reasons, the 2015s are tremendous. (AG)
