K&L Notes

Fabien Collange is a young winemaker from Beaujoalis who we met on our recent trip to the region and who presented us with a rose of gamay that absolutely knocked our socks off. There is no pretense in his approach to winemaking; his goals are to create terroir-driven wines that are both fun and enjoyable. This 2016 rose is about as enjoyable as wine gets. Fresh, crisp, and clean on the palate with a supple weight and pure flavors of fresh strawberries and spice, this is the affordable rose you need a case of for the warm months ahead.

Fabien Collonge describes himself as part of the new generation of winemakers in his region. While taking inspiration and knowledge from his parents and grandparents, he has an open mind when approaching his work and combines traditional methods with new initiatives. This dry and refreshing rosé showcases his deft hand at marrying the two concepts. The fruit is generous and ripe with a bounty of red berries, pink peppercorn and blood orange. The acidity is lively and bright. The minerality shines. This is terroir-driven winemaking at its core!

This fresh 2016 release from Fabien Collonge is crafted from 100 percent Gamay, all from the estate. Much care is put into the selection of the fruit, and the result is a full bodied, dry and mineral driven rosé, with all the cherry blossom, spice notes and fresh strawberry you might expect from Beaujolais. This is your go to rosé for any occasion, and will delight your toughest critic.

When traveling in France, there is always a risk of tasting a wine that shows amazing while on the trip but disappoints when it arrives in the US. When we tasted this wine at a lunch at Chateau de Javernand in the Beaujolais, with the weather being nearly perfect, I knew as I committed to 100 cases that this could be one of those times. After tasting a bottle here at the Los Angeles store when it just recently arrived, I am happy to report that this wine is still spot on! It is fresh, clean, very lively, soft on entry and perfectly delicate on the finish. Perfect summer rosé!

When the weather warms up, there are few things better than a cold bottle of rosé and a few snacks on the picnic table. Tasting this wine in Beaujolais this past spring, Fabien Collonge's Rosé de Gamay was a thirst-quenching, mouthwatering, berry-bursting blast of fresh acidity, clean fruit, and pure pleasure that immediately caught our attention. What made this particular rosé so memorable was seeing where it came from and talking with Fabien about the care he puts into it. Typically wines in the $8-$12 range don't have much of a story. In California, they're generally the result of bulk fruit or large batches of parcels, but in the case of the Collonge rosé, it's all select berries from his estate parcels. The charm and snap of the wine was what really caught my attention. Obviously, we're going to offer a great deal on any wine we import directly, but $10.99 was a total steal. I'd compare it with the fantastic Mount Edward rosé from New Zealand, albeit for six bucks less a bottle.

It is always fun to look outside Provence for delightful little additions to the rose season and here is one from Beaujolais worth looking at. This is a prefect picnic wine with zippy acid, notes of stone fruit, lemon and a dry finish. Pairs well with seafood, salad, pool days, picnics and Sunday funday.
