K&L Notes

A relatively newer Priorat project, Ferrer Bobet's bodegas and vineyards are based in Porrera, one of the finest areas in the region for its wealth of low yielding, old vine Cariñena and Garnacha, as well as its abundance of steeply inclined, slate vineyards. Organic viticulture, hand harvesting and a respectful elevage in a combination of 3,000 liter uprights and smaller barrels all combine to produce stylish, generously fruited and well balanced Priorat wines.

Perhaps the oldest and most well-developed "affordable" Priorat in the shop right now is this 2011 bottling from Ferrer Bobet, a wine that way over-delivers for the price. One doesn't expect to find so many layers of brambly black and blue fruits, sweet licorice, black pepper, coffee, cocoa, and cedary tree bark for only $25 a bottle. Nor does one anticipate such a grippy, tannic backbone that, at the finish, gives way to juicy acidity and lingering notes of mocha. Pick it up now and pair with just about any hearty dinner, but especially a Spanish lamb ragu.

The palate is very floral easing into a granite note. The middle is full of blackberry and blueberry fruit, sweet oak, bitter chocolate and a finish hinting at slate, This is a dark and serious wine with touches of spice and wonderful balance.

A blend of Cariñena (~70%) and Garnacha (30%). Slight smoky aromas, evoking especially charred dark fruit. Quickly moves towards red currant, dark cherry, licorice and mocha. Chewy blackberry and cherry skin on the palate; hints of cedar and licorice as well. Medium acidity, elegant tannin structure, and long finish. Lighter in body than most Priorat wines, this wine is perfect with anything from Sicilian pasta to BBQ. Great value for $25.

A blend of Cariñena and Garnacha, the Ferrer Bobet is an authentic expression of the Priorat and its two star grape varieties. Fresh mixed berry and red fruits blend with subtle roasted grains on the nose, leading to a crisp palate with bright, lively dark fruit (typical of Carignane based wines from the region). This Priorat, with its several years of bottle age, is in a real sweet spot right now. And at under $25 its as good as it gets for this famous region.
