Lighter in color, this blend of Conner Lee, Red Mountain Vineyard and Elephant Mountain fruit has aromas of freshly brewed coffee, dark chocolate, toasty barrel spices and red fruit, with the barrel notes taking the lead. It's silky-soft in feel, with generous raspberry flavors that show a pleasing sense of balance, all backed by a light squeeze of tannins.
Incorporating 5% Syrah and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2012 Foreshadow Merlot (aged 18 months in 50% new large-format French oak) has a slightly forward, superficial feel to go with lots of toasted bread, cassis, licorice, dried spices and hint of chocolate. Medium-bodied, ripe, rounded and well-made, it’s not a long-term prospect, but it offers plenty of charm. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years. (JD)
Lithe and generous, this is deftly balanced to let the dark cherry, licorice and spice flavors bounce easily into a lively finish. Shows presence and directness. Drink now through 2017. 1,009 cases made.
