While I tend to be very impatient with my champagnes, the 1999 is a perfect example of good things coming to those who wait. The '99 vintage is more similar to the more recent 2006 vintage- a little more ripeness and softness in the bottle- but the wine has not lost a sense of young acidity from start to finish. It is accompanied by developed fruit and a sense of apple skin on the palate. Complex spice and earth characters peak through creating more intrigue as the weight and texture of the wine brings a sense of elegance on the palate. Absolutely perfect!

Disgorged in July of 2016, this Vintage Brut from Fallet-Dart is exquisitely complex and nuanced, with aromas and flavors of spiced apple tart and walnut. A softer and earlier maturing vintage, this wine offers a richer palate, yet balanced with a lively acidity and an equally bold mineral component. I recommend this wine to lovers of Champagne who appreciate subtle elegance.

Even though this Champagne is made from majority Chardonnay (70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Meunier), it exhibits terrific weight and richness from the age in bottle and years on the lees. This bottle really shows how the team at Fallet-Dart has perfected the art of making ageable Champagnes in any vintage because they have managed to retain a balance even as the wine mellows out and softens. This vintage is showing the qualities of an older Champagne, exhibiting much more of the brioche and nutty quality than a younger one, yet still manages to come across as fresh and lively, even 18 years later. Definitely one for vintage Champagne lovers to try.

Although older Champagne does not have quite the following here in the states as regular cuvees do there is something rather magical to me about old Champagne. That being said it is difficult to find in my price range, which is another reason why I love our DI program. We get to bring in an 18 year old Champagne and sell it for a song. The '99 was a warmer vintage, but this wine has not fallen off in the slightest. Rich warm notes of honey and almond on the nose with hints of sherry lead to a rich nutty, almost dried fruit palate. There is still plenty of acid to keep this alive and help it to finish and linger.

The Fallet-Dart Champagnes all represent fantastic values, and there are a number to choose from depending on your preference and budget. Each on shows a lovely toasty note from their preference for long lees contact. This '99 shows great density and a very ripe now maturing fruit. A delicious honey comb note mingling with a classic bready note round out the palate. Here's a great chance to access a slightly older and completely delicious Champagne
