K&L Notes

Some of you may remember the massive closeout deals we have done in the past like Havens and Thomas Coyne. Well, we're here to tell you we have another up our sleeve with Knez. The Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from Knez have long been staff favorites here at K&L since their first vintage back in 2009 and the wines have only gotten better since then. So why, you may ask, are the wines being closed out? The Knez family owned three of the top vineyards in Anderson Valley, Cerise, Demuth and Knez Estate, and in late 2016 Kosta Browne bought the vineyards from the Knez family. Soon after the family decided that they wanted to get out of the wine game and have come to us to help them sell some of their remaining inventory. This has led us to truly incredible deals on a set of 2014 Anderson Valley Pinot Noirs from sites that will soon be unaffordable, impossible to get monopoles for Kosta Browne. I would highly recommend that you do not miss the incredible values that these wines offer. (Bryan Brick, K&L)

I was excited to hear we were getting more of the Knez wines because I loved the wines when we got them in last year. This 2014 bottling is delicious and has an amazing price. Dried rose petal, black cherry and oak spice aromas are complimenting to the medium-body and earthiness of this Pinot. Showing the true terroir of Anderson Valley, this $20 Pinot is a real winner.

Anderson Valley may very well be the last place in California where you can find a really high quality bottle of Pinot Noir for thirty to thirty-five bucks. When you start getting into the sub-twenty dollar realm, you really need to be picky unless you have the inside scoop on something - like close-out pricing or declassification of estate fruit. In this instance it's both, which is why this may be the best twenty dollar bottle of Pinot you ever drink.

When I tasted this wine I thought I died and went to Pinot heaven. It's stunningly beautiful and elegant Pinot Noir. Super bright , packed with juicy deep dark cherries, cranberries, with fresh vibrant acidity that lifts the richness of the fruit to ethereal level of balance. I love the firm structure of this wine with nuanced and delicate details at the same time. This wine just absolutely floored me down and I am seconds away from buying a case of it for myself.

Rich and poised cranberry, strawberry and cola berry flavors with a smooth tannic disposition and a bright, subtle acid lift on the back end. This is a delicious, well-structured and richly fruited Pinot Noir from a great appellation. Don’t miss it.

I love having Anderson Valley wines like this on hand to show customers how diverse of a pinot country California truly is. While you get the ripeness of the 2014 vintage here, it doesn't come without a bit of zip on the finish. There's a lovely hint of baking spice and bit of crushed herbs late on the palate. Fans of the winery will want to load up on this one as I think--of the three--this will evolve beautifully over the next five years.

The keystone wine for Knez has long been their straight Anderson Valley bottling, however it is about as far from a “basic” bottling as possible. All the fruit comes from their three estate vineyards, Cerise, Demuth and Knez Estate and the same levels of attention and detail are put into this wine as the single vineyard offerings. 2014, touted as “unusually rich” by the winery, is just a killer vintage that shows off power and structure, making these wines a bit more masculine than long time fans would expect. As this wine airs out there are intense aromas of whole blueberry, kirschwasser, and dried apricots with hints of cola and wild berry candy. Entering with a lot of savor/umami tones this driving wine shocks with its complexity and focus. Add freshly fruited notes of wild blackberry, pastilles, airy blueberry meringue and white sage and this becomes something truly special. Needless to say there is very little at the $20 price point in the world of Pinot Noir that can hold a candle to this bottling.
